French prime minister survives first of two no-confidence votes

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu survived the first of two no-confidence votes in parliament on Thursday, with a motion tabled by the far-left France Unbowed party defeated in the National Assembly.

A total of 271 lawmakers voted in favour of toppling the government, short of the 289 needed for a majority.

Lecornu is now set to face a second no-confidence motion, filed by Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally and its allies. His centre-right government is also expected to survive that vote.

His chances improved after securing support from the Socialists by suspending an unpopular provision of President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform that would have raised the retirement age from 62 to 64.
