Ariana Grande’s Latest ‘Wicked’ Promotional Tour Look Honors Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba

Ariana Grande channeled the subdued glamour of the 1930s in a vintage dress for her appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in New York City on Tuesday.

The Oscar-nominated actress seemingly paid homage to her “Wicked” costar Cynthia Erivo‘s character Elphaba in a flowing black gown with sheer fabric and shimmering green embroidery designed in the shape of leaves. The dress was sourced from a New York City vintage boutique and the archive Amarcord Vintage Fashion.

Coordinated with a flowing shawl, the dress merged elements of sartorial whimsy with method dressing. Forgoing last year’s Glinda-fied glamour in pink and blush tones, Grande’s worn darker hues and black during her “Wicked: For Good” promotional tour, with her “Tonight Show” dress the latest among an assortment of gowns and looks curated by image architect and stylist Law Roach.

The silhouette of Grande’s dress included an angled, slightly plunging V-shaped neckline with thin straps and some semi-sheer fabric at the bodice. A cinched waist gave the label-less 1930s dress a defined silhouette. The skirt, which flowed with an effortless quality, included three angled rows of emerald leaf embroidery, adding a touch of color and sparkle to Grande’s subdued vintage look.

Located in New York City’s Williamsburg, Brooklyn, neighborhood, Amarcord Vintage Fashion features retro and archival pieces both designer and label-less from previous decades. Oscar de la Renta, Schiaparelli and Mugler are a few of the high-fashion labels featured in the boutique.

Along with her more somber approach to the “Wicked: For Good” promotional tour wardrobe, Grande’s also gravitated toward other vintage designs. For the film’s London premiere on Nov. 10, Grande wore a Gilbert Adrian, aka Adrian Adolph Greenburg, gown circa 1952. The couturier served as the costume designer for the 1939 adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz.”

“Wicked: For Good,” the sequel to 2024’s “Wicked,” follows The Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, The Good Witch of the North, played by Grande, through their tumultuous relationship after Dorothy Gale crash lands in Oz. The film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical hits theaters Friday.
