Floods hit parts of southern France
Parts of southern France are battling severe flooding in the run-up to Christmas.
The French warning service Vigicrue reported on Tuesday that the Hérault department has been hit by “exceptional flooding” near the city of Montpellier.
Local prefect Chantal Mauchet described the situation as likely the worst in more than 30 years.
The highest warning level is in effect for the area, even though the water is now receding. Many households were left without electricity and roads were flooded. Getting around remains very difficult, Mauchet said. However, there were no casualties, she added.
Parts of Montpellier itself were also flooded due to heavy rain. For safety reasons, the Christmas market, parks and the zoo remained closed.
