Mazda and Hyundai Just Turned China Into Their EV Shortcut
Singapore is about to get two electric cars that make the old phrase “Chinese car” nearly useless. One wears a Hyundai badge. The other says Mazda. Both are built in China, but the more revealing detail is not where workers tighten the bolts. It is where the engineering decisions were made.

This is the real story: China is no longer merely the auto industry’s cheap factory. It has become the place where established Japanese and Korean automakers go to develop an EV quickly enough to stay in the fight.

The Hyundai Elexio and Mazda 6e take very different routes to that conclusion. Hyundai brought its own electric platform to China and localized nearly everything sitting on top of it. Mazda leaned on Changan for the electric and digital guts, then applied Mazda design and chassis tuning. Either way, the product-development center of gravity moved east.
The Hyundai Is More Chinese Than Its Platform Suggests
Hyundai’s Elexio is the subtler of the two. It rides on E-GMP, the dedicated architecture beneath the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and Kia EV6. That sounds like familiar Korean hardware exported to a Beijing factory. It is not quite that simple.
Hyundai calls the strategy “In China, For China, To Global.” The Elexio pairs E-GMP with an 88.1-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, a Qualcomm 8295 cockpit processor and a 27-inch display. Beijing Hyundai did not simply assemble an Ioniq 5 with different headlights. It built a China-market answer to the software-heavy family EVs that have been eating foreign brands’ lunch there, then prepared that answer for export.
Here is the first wait-a-minute detail. E-GMP is famous for 800-volt charging, but the badge on the floorpan does not guarantee the expensive electrical hardware that made the platform famous. The export-spec Elexio uses a roughly 400-volt pack and tops out at 150 kW on a DC charger. Hyundai quotes 38 minutes for a 10-to-80-percent charge. An 800-volt Ioniq 5 can do the same job in under 18 minutes under ideal conditions.

That is not an engineering failure. It is cost engineering. LFP cells trade some energy density for lower material cost, long cycle life and less dependence on nickel and cobalt. A 400-volt system also avoids paying for capability many owners rarely use. The Elexio still claims up to 562 km, or 349 miles, on the WLTP cycle. What it gives up is the charging hero number that helped turn E-GMP into a technical halo.
In other words, Hyundai has separated the platform from the prestige specification. That is a bigger strategic move than another crossover launch.
Mazda Borrowed the Nervous System
The Mazda 6e is less coy about its origins. Mazda says the car is the export version of the Chinese-market EZ-6, developed with Changan, its partner of two decades. Mazda contributed design, craftsmanship and driving calibration. Changan supplied the electrification and smart-cabin technology.
That division of labor would have sounded backwards 15 years ago. Japanese automakers taught Chinese joint ventures how to build globally credible cars. Now a Chinese partner is supplying the battery-electric and software foundation that lets Mazda put a modern EV sedan into overseas showrooms without waiting for an entirely in-house program.

The second wait-a-minute detail is sitting in plain view on the dashboard. The 6e replaces Mazda’s familiar rotary controller with a 14.6-inch touchscreen. Mazda spent years arguing that a console-mounted dial reduced distraction and belonged in a driver-focused cabin. Its new electric flagship arrives with the interface convention Chinese EV buyers have already made mandatory.
That does not mean the car lacks Mazda character. Rear-wheel drive, restrained bodywork and chassis tuning matter. But software architecture is becoming as defining as steering feel, and that is the piece Mazda needed help delivering quickly. Badge engineering used to mean changing a grille. In the EV era, it can mean borrowing the nervous system and rewriting the personality.
Singapore’s Rulebook Exposes the Trade-Off
Singapore is an especially useful place to watch this play out because it taxes power as well as purchase. Under the country’s Certificate of Entitlement rules, an EV rated above 110 kW falls into Category B. The 160-kW Hyundai and 190-kW Mazda both clear that threshold comfortably.
That matters because several automakers sell detuned EV variants in Singapore specifically to reach the cheaper Category A pool. Hyundai and Mazda could have chased that advantage. At least in the approved specifications, they did not. Buyers will pay for power they may rarely deploy on a tightly regulated island, but the cars retain the output expected in larger export markets.

The regulation also reveals why a single “global car” is becoming harder to define. Battery chemistry, charging voltage, motor output, software services and even user-interface philosophy can all change by market while the body and badge stay the same. The factory location tells you less than the supplier map and the calibration sheet.
The Shortcut Is Becoming the Strategy
Legacy automakers are under pressure from two clocks. They need competitive EVs now, and they need to avoid spending billions on products that may arrive after demand, regulation or battery prices have shifted again. China offers mature battery supply chains, faster development cycles and customers who punish weak software immediately.
That helps explain why the country’s current export surge is about more than BYD, Geely or SAIC. As we recently reported, Chinese factories are increasingly using the rest of the world as an outlet for enormous capacity. The Elexio and 6e add a twist: some of those exports will arrive behind badges buyers do not think of as Chinese at all.
It also connects to Southeast Asia’s push to become an EV manufacturing base of its own. Today, Chinese plants and partners provide the quickest route to market. Tomorrow, governments from Thailand to Indonesia will try to pull more of that value chain inside their borders.

Hyundai still owns a deep bench of EV engineering. Mazda still knows how to make a chassis feel like a Mazda. Neither company is surrendering its identity. They are deciding which parts of that identity are worth engineering alone.
The memorable point is this: China used to build the car someone else invented. Now it is increasingly inventing the car someone else badges.
