The Importance of Balancing Technology with the Human Experience


The most successful warehouse leaders are using technology as a support system for their workforce, according to Tatiana Muñoz.

Muñoz is director of business development, U.S., at Hardis Supply Chain, where she leads strategic growth and partnerships for advanced warehouse and supply chain software solutions. A 20-year-industry veteran, Muñoz’s resume includes experience in transportation, warehousing and supply chain technology. She has a strong practitioner’s perspective on operational modernization.

Recently, Muñoz received the 2026 Women in Supply Chain Forum Trailblazers Award, which recognizes women who have spent at least a decade helping advance the supply chain industry. Here, she shares insights about industry trends, the challenges companies face and how technology can help.

Sourcing Journal: What are the challenges facing warehouse leaders today? And what role can technology play?

Tatiana Muñoz: Warehouse leaders are navigating a very different operating environment than they were even a few years ago. They are being asked to increase speed and productivity while managing labor constraints, rising customer expectations, greater order complexity, and constant pressure to control costs.

At the same time, they are expected to introduce new technologies without disrupting the operation. The challenge is that modernization is not simply about adding more technology, but is about creating an operation that is more adaptable, more visible and ultimately easier for people to manage. The most successful warehouse leaders are looking at technology as an enabler of their teams rather than a replacement for them.

SJ: Why do you believe that warehouse modernization often fails to deliver the expected outcomes?

T.M.: One of the biggest reasons is that companies sometimes start with the technology rather than the problem they are trying to solve. There can be a tendency to invest in automation, AI or a new warehouse management system because the technology is available, without first asking whether it addresses the operation’s most important challenges.

Modernization also can become too focused on implementation and not enough on adoption. A technology project may look successful on paper because it was deployed on time and within budget, but if employees find it difficult to use or it does not fit naturally into their workflows, the expected benefits will not materialize. There is also a tendency to underestimate how interconnected warehouse operations are. A change to one process can affect inventory, order fulfillment, transportation, labor planning and customer service.

Modernization needs to consider the warehouse as part of the broader supply chain rather than as an isolated environment.

Ultimately, technology should be measured by business outcomes. Does it help the operation become more productive, more accurate, more flexible, or more responsive? If the answer is not clear before an investment is made, it becomes much harder to deliver meaningful results.

SJ: Why do tech solutions need to be designed around the people doing the work?

T.M.: A warehouse can have the most advanced technology available, but people still have to use it, manage it, and respond when something does not go according to plan. That makes the human element fundamental to any modernization effort.

Warehouse employees understand the realities of the operation in ways that are not always visible from a management dashboard or process map. They know where bottlenecks occur, which processes create unnecessary work, and where an apparently efficient process may create problems somewhere else. That knowledge needs to be incorporated into technology decisions from the beginning. Solutions should make work easier and more intuitive, not introduce additional complexity.

This is especially important as the industry becomes more automated. The role of the warehouse employee is changing, but it is not disappearing. People still need to supervise systems, manage exceptions, interpret information, and make decisions. Technology should give them better information and better tools to do those things.

When employees are involved in the modernization process, they are also more likely to understand the value of the change and embrace it. Adoption is not something that happens after implementation. It needs to be part of the design.

SJ: What do warehouse leaders need to consider before making investments in technology?

T.M.: The first question should be “What business problem are we trying to solve?” Leaders should understand their current processes, identify the biggest sources of inefficiency, and establish measurable objectives before selecting a technology. They also need to consider how a solution will integrate with existing systems and whether it can adapt as the business changes.

Scalability is particularly important.

A solution that works well for today’s order volumes or product mix may not be sufficient in two or five years. Warehouse leaders should think about flexibility, interoperability, and the ability to add capabilities over time rather than looking only at the immediate return on investment.

They also need to evaluate the total impact on their workforce. What skills will employees need? How will responsibilities change? What training will be required? And how will managers interact with the new system?

Finally, leaders should avoid trying to transform everything at once. Modernization can be approached incrementally, using specific projects to demonstrate value and build confidence. The goal should not be to have the most technologically advanced warehouse but should be to have a warehouse that is better equipped to meet the needs of the business and its customers.

SJ: How is AI and automation changing the industry?

T.M.: AI and automation are moving warehouses toward a model where technology can anticipate, recommend, and execute, rather than simply record what has already happened. Automation can take over repetitive and physically demanding tasks, while AI can help warehouse leaders make better decisions about inventory, labor, order prioritization, and resource allocation. The combination can make operations more responsive to changing demand and help teams manage increasing complexity without simply adding more people.

However, I think the most important change is the shift in the role of people. As more routine tasks become automated, human expertise becomes more valuable in areas such as exception management, problem-solving, coordination, and decision-making. We should not think of AI and automation as technology replacing warehouse leaders. Instead, they can give leaders greater visibility into what is happening across the operation and help them make decisions faster.

The warehouses of the future will not necessarily be those with the most automation. They will be the ones that find the right balance between technology and human expertise. The real opportunity is to build operations where technology handles what it does best and people are empowered to focus on the decisions, relationships, and complex situations that require human judgment.
