Last summer, the halter top soft-launched its more elevated era, emerging in sleek neutral-toned tops and dresses alongside polished, silky bandana-inspired styles. Fashion insiders and models off-duty — including Bella Hadid — co-signed the trend in streamlined black iterations that subtly nodded to the silhouettes of the ’90s and early 2000s. This season, the halter top is leaning even further into sophistication, with brands such as Toteme, St. Agni and Cult Gaia embracing silky draping, soft ruffles and minimalist takes on the silhouette. At this year’s Met Gala, “Heated Rivalry” actor Connor Storrie made his debut on the iconic red carpet in a black-and-white polka-dot halter top by Saint Laurent, showcasing the trend’s more luxe direction. Earlier this year, Kylie Jenner stepped out in a silky, ruffled halter top straight from Maison Margiela’s spring 2026 runway — a cropped, midriff-baring look that still felt decidedly polished rather than overtly Y2K.

Then there was Kaia Gerber, who was photographed in Los Angeles styling a shawl-inspired halter top from All My Love with dark-wash jeans, black leather ballet flats and an oversize Chanel Maxi Flap Bag. Each star-studded look aligns with fashion’s broader shift toward subtly sensual dressing, leaning into silhouettes that feel sexy without appearing overtly provocative.

Brands are doubling down on the sophisticated halter in a range of forms, proving the former going-out staple now has far more versatility. The silhouette’s cinematic-style makeover has transformed it into a piece that works just as seamlessly with wide-leg linen trousers on summer vacation as it does with silky slip skirts for a night out or sharp suiting for a modern office look.

According to stylist Amaia Anderson, the key to styling today’s halter top is keeping the rest of the look refined and understated. “Style a silk halter top with wide-leg trousers and a sculptural belt for a look that feels polished yet effortless,” she said. “Pair it with a sleek kitten heel, a clutch and a bold statement earring to elevate the look.” 

Like many early 2000s trends now making a comeback (think wedge sandals and low-rise pants), the halter top has shed much of the overt flashiness that once defined it. In its place is a more versatile, understated version of the silhouette — one that feels equally suited for minimalist dressing, quiet-luxury styling and modern eveningwear. The result is less about recreating Y2K nostalgia exactly as it was and more about reworking a once-controversial staple into something undeniably polished for today.
