Ciara Becomes the Latest Star to Join the Bob Bandwagon

Ciara debuted her latest hair transformation at the inaugural TIME100 Sports Gala on Thursday night in New York, where she was accompanied by her husband, former NFL quarterback Russell Wilson.

The singer-songwriter donned a caramel- and blond-colored bob embellished with bouncy layers and flipped ends. Combed over the left side of her head, the voluminous blowout revealed chocolate undertones at her roots, melting with surrounding hues. Together, the cut and color were on par with summer hair trends.

Speaking with WWD in April, beauty insiders predicted the return of the ultra-buzzy bob trend with a new wave of coloring techniques this season, including what’s now been described as “the rooted blond.” The exposed technique marks a departure from the previous platinum and bleached blond reign. “What this looks like is a slightly lighter root shadow than the client’s base to allow a seamless grow-out,” explained Moroccanoil ambassador Travis Ogletree. “People still want to feel really bright without the maintenance that is required for being a faux blonde.

Indeed, Ciara’s color leaned more bronze than traditional blond — but her roots were exposed nonetheless. The stylist who helped update the singer’s hair was celebrity artist Cesar Deleon Ramirez, whose client list also includes Karol G. Ramirez confirmed his handiwork in a statement sent to WWD.

First popularized by movie legend Mary Thurman in the 1920s, “the bob” has rapidly made its way through the upper echelons of Hollywood, with Hailey Bieber, Leslie Bibb, Selena Gomez and more sporting the blunt on several red carpets over the last few years. After foregoing a trim for long hair this spring, Bieber made the bold decision to cut a long bob — a “lob,” if you will — at the end of June. The transformation was certainly not as dramatic as it has been in the past; however, it could be soon if she starts to experience “bob blindness,” a concept used to describe the self-delusion of thinking a bob is too long when it’s not.
